Research indicates that individuals subjected to involuntary psychiatric commitment may face significantly higher risks of death or involvement in violent crime following discharge. The findings challenge assumptions that forced hospitalization improves long-term safety outcomes for individuals or the public.
Possible contributing factors include trauma associated with involuntary confinement, disruption of social supports, and intensive drug regimens during hospitalization. Elevated risks were found to persist well beyond the immediate post-discharge period.
The data raise important questions about the long-term consequences of coercive psychiatric practices.
