Rethinking “Treatment-Resistant” Depression

Research suggests that many cases labeled as “treatment-resistant depression” may reflect the limitations or adverse effects of antidepressant medications rather than an untreatable condition. Long-term drug use has been shown to alter brain chemistry in ways that may reduce treatment responsiveness.

Escalating medication strategies can lead to diminishing returns and, in some cases, worsening outcomes, resulting in additional diagnoses and complex drug combinations.

The findings call into question prevailing assumptions about treatment resistance and the long-term use of antidepressants.
