Millions of Children on Multiple Psychiatric Drugs

The psychiatric industry has ensnared millions of children in a dangerous web of multiple drug prescriptions, a practice known as polypharmacy that operates without scientific foundation or adequate safety testing. Research published in JAMA Psychiatry reveals that nearly 1.5 million children and adolescents are simultaneously prescribed two or more psychotropic medications, with rates climbing to 7 percent among adolescents aged 12 to 17. The situation becomes even more alarming for vulnerable populations, as children in foster care experience polypharmacy rates reaching 41 percent in some studies.

These psychiatric drug cocktails combine stimulants with antidepressants, antipsychotics with mood stabilizers, and various other potentially lethal mixtures. The Food and Drug Administration has issued black box warnings about suicide risks associated with antidepressants in children and adolescents, yet psychiatrists continue prescribing these medications in dangerous combinations. The adverse effects documented include metabolic syndrome, substantial weight gain, diabetes, cardiovascular complications, and heightened suicide risk. Despite these documented dangers, the practice persists because psychiatric diagnoses themselves lack medical validity, being determined through subjective voting among psychiatrists rather than objective medical testing.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights International has called for comprehensive reforms including mandatory informed consent regarding drug risks, independent oversight of polypharmacy prescriptions, and thorough investigation into the financial entanglements between psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies. This chemical experimentation on vulnerable youth serves primarily to enrich the pharmaceutical industry while subjecting children to profound harm for problems that frequently stem from behavioral or environmental factors rather than biological disease.
