Long Term Antidepressant Use Linked Harm

Research led by the University of Bristol has found that long term use of antidepressants is associated with a range of serious adverse health outcomes. The study examined patient records over extended periods and identified increased risks that grow the longer the drugs are taken.

Patients using antidepressants for multiple years were found to have higher rates of conditions including cardiovascular disease type 2 diabetes falls and fractures. The risks were significantly greater among those prescribed antidepressants continuously rather than for short term use.

The findings raise concerns about routine long term prescribing practices and challenge claims that antidepressants are a safe solution for ongoing mental distress. The research highlights the need to reassess widespread reliance on psychiatric drugs that may contribute to long term physical harm.
