Dr. Joseph Sharpe graduated from the University of Tennessee, Memphis medical school in 1999 and then went on to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Sharpe currently maintains a private practice while also serving at Baptist Hospital in Nashville and Middle Tennessee Medical Center and TrustPoint Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee..
In 2009, ProPublica reports that Sharpe received almost $41,000 from drug companies, most notably Eli Lilly ($37,900 for speaking) and Pfizer ($3000 for speaking, and $60 for meals).
Figures reported for 2010 are comparable, with Eli Lilly leading ($35939 for speaking, another $2707 for travel) and Pfizer in second ($2000 for speaking, $2732 in travel, $141 meals and $55 for “items, gifts”). He was also given $113 for meals from Cephalon.
2011 brought only $5625 from Eli Lilly for speaking, though Lilly reportedly paid another $1539 for travel and $1036 for meals. AstraZeneca paid only $482 for meals in 2011, and Cephalon $100.
2012 payments included $419 for meals, and 2013 included $240 for meals and another $12 in “expenses” paid by Merck.
