Antidepressant Withdrawal Risks

WASHINGTON, July 15, 2025

Growing evidence shows that withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants can be severe, long-lasting, and frequently mistaken for relapse. Reported symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, physical pain, dizziness, and cognitive difficulties, sometimes lasting months or longer.

Standard tapering guidelines often underestimate the intensity and duration of withdrawal effects, leaving patients unprepared for the challenges of discontinuation. When withdrawal symptoms are misidentified as a return of the original condition, patients may be placed back on medication unnecessarily.

These findings highlight the need for greater awareness and more accurate guidance surrounding antidepressant discontinuation.
